3 reasons parents might change their choice of guardian

After naming a guardian for their minor child, some parents change their choice before the first-named party assumes their duties. Different reasons can contribute to this decision.

Here are three of them:

1. Guardian no longer wants to do it

Your chosen guardian may experience significant changes in their life and, in turn, may no longer be able to accept the appointment. Examples of such changes include health issues, relocation, financial burdens and new responsibilities like the birth of a new child.

The guardian might also change their mind if your child has new needs and they believe they are not the best fit to meet those needs. For example, your child develops medical needs that require special care, which the guardian might be unable to provide.

2. Guardian dies

If your chosen guardian dies, you need to name a new party to take care of your child when you are unable to.

3. Parents change their minds

Parents can change their minds concerning the guardian they choose for their minor child. For example, when they find someone whom they believe is better suited to be the child’s guardian.

It’s also not uncommon for parents to name a new guardian when they change their family’s values such as religious beliefs, parenting styles and cultural values. For example, if they move away from the religious beliefs that they once shared with the guardian they picked at the time.

Parents should review their choice of guardian regularly to ensure it still makes sense. If you believe it’s time to change your child’s guardian, obtain more information to validate your new choice.
