Is it too early to make an estate plan?

On Behalf of | Aug 22, 2025 | Estate Planning |

An estate plan can be used for many different things that will likely happen near the end of your life. For instance, your estate plan could include a living will or a medical power of attorney, determining how medical decisions should be made if you are incapacitated. It also tells your family and other beneficiaries how to split up your assets in your estate after you pass away.

As such, many people think of estate planning as something that they should do in their 60s or 70s. As they get closer to the end of their life, they want to create a plan that will guide their family moving forward.

This certainly is an important time to think about estate planning, but the trouble is that young people often believe that it is too early to make an estate plan. In reality, you only need to be 18 years old, so you may be able to make that plan far sooner than you thought.

Why early planning is important

Planning in advance can be very helpful. For one thing, you cannot predict when you will pass away or when your family will need that estate plan. If something unexpected happens, it is much better to have a plan in place early.

Additionally, there are many points earlier in your life where an estate plan can be helpful. For instance, maybe you are in your mid-20s and you and your partner recently had a child. You could use your estate plan to put money in a trust for that child or to choose a guardian for them if you pass away.

In other words, as long as you are 18, it cannot be too early to make your estate plan. Just be sure you know what legal steps to take to set it up.
